Val Shatwell

My spaces in the Solar look out onto Patons factory and beyond to the Ochils. The hills and mills of the area suggested the idea; the cairn and the cone of spun wool suggested the forms.

The left-hand chamber contains a cairn made of wool fleece, plaster and wax. Barbed wires, wool caught on the barbs, connect the cairn to the window. They re- enter the right-hand chamber as thick woollen thread, and attach to piles of cones sculpted from wool fleece.

The separation of the two chambers by Peter Russell’s “Library” allowed me to suggest rawness and wildness on one side and a more consciously processed aspect on the other.
